He had an aura, always. Whether it was the usherette or Lord Plod sitting in the royal box, everyone thought he was speaking to them. And when we first went on holiday, we were mobbed. People wanted to travel with us, talk to us, but he hadn’t done anything then. He wasn’t famous. But even when he was nothing, as it were, you knew he was something. — Sian Phillips

“In A Single Man, Colin Firth and I played two people who been best friends for twenty years. In reality, we had just met, and only worked together for three days. I’d only heard exemplary things about him so had extremely high expectations. And he managed to exceed every one. With his ease, charm, humor, and generosity it wasn’t hard for me to believe that I’ve known and loved him all of my life. His courage and integrity in letting us see the depth of a one man’s shattering grief is testament to his enormous talent. And I can tell you that three days is not nearly enough time to spend in the company of the magnificent Colin Firth. Congratulations.”
